My daughter had missed months of school but continued taking invasive tests doctors prescribed without ant indication of what was wrong. After seeing Dr. Kim, we saw improvements shortly after and he was able to pinpoint what was causing her suffering and pain. She went from not eating or feeling well, losing a lot of weight and her strength to being a strong, happy and healthy again 10 year old! I am amazed at what Dr. Kim has done and will always be thankful for getting back my happy and healthy daughter. Thank you Dr. Kim and terrific staff at Kingsway Naturopathic Clinic.

Naturopathic Medicine

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a form of healthcare which utilizes conventional medical knowledge and blends this with the philosophies, wisdom and healing power of traditional natural therapies. The word “Naturopathic” indicates the posture of the doctors who work here. The true healer is within each individual, and a doctor is an assistant to that Great Healer within. Clinic comes from the Greek word klin, meaning a bed. We interpret this in a poetic sense that our clinic is a place not of survival, but of personal thriving peace.

The current model categorizes the public into two groups – those who are sick and those who are healthy. If you are deemed sick, you get the appropriate cookie-cutter protocols that target the symptoms rather than honing in on the deeper cause. In fact, there is a large “gap” between the two camps of sick people and healthy people. Many people fall into this gap between the two groups.

These are the people with underlying malnutrition, chronic allergies, insomnia, headaches, obesity, metabolic syndrome, chronic low grade aches and pains, and toxicity problems – to name a few. Often times these individuals come back with borderline or negative lab results that do not reflect the presence of disease as categorized by the regular medical system. However, they genuinely do not feel well. These individuals account for a large percentage of the population and because they are not classified as “sick”, they are not guided by the conventional medical system. This group of individuals do require an empowering vision and proper guidance. This is where the importance of an excellent therapeutic relationship between the doctor and the patient comes into play.

Naturopathic medicine emphasizes the doctor as teacher as opposed to dictating what the patient should and shouldn't do. Here, the doctor facilitates the process of healing through education and creating the right conditions for health. Naturopathic Medicine provides an array of tools that can be used to treat an individual shifting them from an illness to dysfunction and from dysfunction to health. Every person who comes through the door of this clinic is treated with a compassionate listening ear and more importantly, we incorporate an individualized approach to health rather than a 'cookie-cutter', 'one size fits all' approach.

As naturopathic physicians, we have an array of therapies at our disposal. You may read more about what the therapies that we offer by clicking on 'Services' or use the menu to the right of this page.

The 6 Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

First do no Harm (Primum non nocere) - The naturopathic doctor's goal is to provide healthcare via the least invasive methods with minimal side effects possible.

The healing power of nature (Vis medicatrix naturae) - The body possesses an innate wisdom and inherent capability to heal, with the doctor acting as a facilitator to this healing.

Treat the whole person (Tolle totum) - All aspects of the individual's physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health is viewed as a whole, being tightly interconnected and related without having to isolate the problem into organ or disease systems.

Identify and treat the cause (Tolle causam) - The naturopathic doctor does not simply relieve symptoms but instead looks to remove any obstacles to healing while treating the root cause of the disease.

Doctor as teacher (Docere) - Educating and empowering the patient, allowing them to be an active participant in their own health is paramount to the healing process.

Prevention - The naturopathic doctor provides preventative healthcare focusing on achieving optimal health as opposed to only treating a disease once it has set in.
